It is characterised by the use of bright colours in paintings, real-life subject matters, a thick application of paint, and by giving paintings depth with symbolism and emotions. Post-impressionism developed in response to Impressionism. It was thanks to his brother’s widow, Jo van Gogh-bonger, that van Gogh found success after his death as she loaned his works to exhibitions and promoted his works where she could. This was The Red Vineyard, which he sold for an equivalent of $1,500 in today’s money. Unlike Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and even his contemporaries like Claude Monet, Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime. Vincent van Gogh died in 1890 at the age of thirty-seven. Each of the thirty-six self-portrait depicted a man with an intense blue gaze and a head of fiery red hair.

Van Gogh’s face is as famous as movie stars and pop singers thanks to the several self-portraits he painted during his lifetime. He became more sophisticated with colour, using it for symbolism and emotional resonance, thanks to the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin. His sombre tonal colours began to brighten up thanks to the influence of Camille Pissarro. What gave van Gogh his unique style was the influence of the Impressionists in France and the import of Japanese prints to Europe, as seen in Courtesan: after Eisen (1887). His first paintings were earth-toned scenes of nature and depicted peasants. It took some time for van Gogh to develop his recognisable style.

As a result, he painted approximately 875 artworks and left behind 1100 drawings. His respite from these chaotic states came from enjoying the beautiful scenery around him. Unfortunately, van Gogh drank heavily, smoked excessively, and his mental state often brought him a deal of pain. He then decided to give happiness to the world by creating beauty. In 1880, despite van Gogh wishing to “preach the gospel everywhere,” church authorities in Belgium (where he was working among coal miners) finally dismissed him once they realised, he wasn’t cut out to be a pastor. For seven years, he worked at a commercial art firm then gave this up in his pursuit to help humanity, working as a preacher, a teacher, and a missionary. Before this, van Gogh took up various jobs.

In fact, he was twenty-seven years old when he finally decided to dedicate himself completely to painting. Van Gogh came into artmaking a little later in life.

This may come as a surprise thanks to the popularity of his work. Compared to Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh’s art career was brief. Van Gogh was a child who lacked self-confidence. His father was a pastor and, as a result, his upbringing was an atmosphere of religion and culture. Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland in 1853. Luckily, he had the financial and emotional support of his brother Theo, an art dealer. At the age of twenty-seven, van Gogh dedicated himself fulltime to artmaking.
